I read the novel feeling like the students were a bunch of spoiled brats. Also, if a teacher chooses to, I don’t know, have a life, they get reprimanded by the parents. I’m pretty sure you can imagine the type of texts they get (suicidal, illness, malicious, harassment, sexual…) and they need to take the responsibility, not the parents. So any student at any time can text the teacher. So anything society looks down on is suddenly incapable to teaching.Ĭell phones are given to the teacher and they are expected to respond to any texts a student sends them. They must be model examples in order to give students a “good example”. Basically a teacher is expected to put their student’s success and well-being above their own private life. I can’t say for certain whether it’s normal in Japan, but I know for sure that this is not something that is done in North America or even Europe. There are, however, some other themes she brings up which I think is something we need to talk about.įrankly, I thought the teachers had too much obligation to insure the well-being of their students.

It kind of takes a back seat towards the end and I think if she tied it to the end somehow, it would be great. The only critique is that she doesn’t really go anywhere with this theme. I don’t want to reveal the condition because it will take away from the book, but it’s quite an interesting topic to put so heavily in the book. Although she only refers to Japan, this is something that occurs worldwide. One in on how we treat people who are afflicted with a certain condition. Through the novel, Minato manages to touch on a few themes. You already know who killed and how, it’s just a matter of why. It’s almost like reading statements from victims at a crime. So, we find out very early who murdered the girl and we get 6 perspectives that detail what led up to the death and what occurred after. She knows who killed her daughter and the entire book is a slow reveal of how her extracts her revenge. The audience is not one you would normally associate murder with, and, the continuing themes are also something interesting to apply to the murder thriller genre.Ī 4 year old girl is killed at a middle school and her mother, a teacher, knows that this was no accident. At the expense of sounding crude, this was a fun read. Kanae Minato has an amazing ability to keep you hooked to the end of every chapter to find out the twist.
